La tradition populaire des ashiq est l’expression poétique et musicale favorite des Azerbaïdjanais. Le ashiq est un barde : poète et compositeur, il chante et joue du luth saz parfois accompagné par un joueur de hautbois balaban. Le répertoire se compose principalement de chants d'amour et de récits épiques ou romantiques mis en musique. Cet album présente une quinzaine des meilleurs ashiq d’aujourd’hui toutes générations confondues. Ils interprètent les grandes œuvres du répertoire, composées entre le XVIIe et le XXe siècle, dans les divers styles régionaux auxquels ils appartiennent : Ganjabasar où l’on cultive l’exubérance, Borchaly célèbre pour ses maîtres du luth saz, le Shirvan dont les petits ensembles – un chanteur, un saz, un hautbois balaban, des percussions – ont fortement influencé la tradition du mugham.

The folk tradition of the ashiq is the favorite musical expression of the Azerbaijani people. The ashiq is a poet, a composer, a singer, a saz lute player sometimes accompanied by a balaban oboe. The repertoire is mostly composed of love songs and epic or romantic musical narratives. This album presents a selection of the best ashiq chosen among all generations. They perform famous compositions of the repertoire, composed between the 17th and the 20th century in different regional styles: Ganjabasar known for its exuberant musicians, Borchaly which is famous for its masters of saz, and Shirvan small ensembles (singer, saz, balaban and drums) which have greatly influenced the mugham tradition.
