ANTHOLOGY OF ASHIQ Bards of Azerbaijan The folk tradition of the ashiq is the favorite musical expression of the Azerbaijani people. The ashiq is a poet, a composer, a singer, a saz lute player sometimes accompanied by a balaban oboe. The repertoire is mostly composed of love songs and epic or romantic musical narratives. This album presents a selection of the best ashiq chosen among all generations. They perform famous compositions of the repertoire, composed between the 17th and the 20th century in different regional styles: Ganjabasar known for its exuberant musicians, Borchaly which is famous for its masters of saz, and Shirvan small ensembles (singer, saz, balaban and drums) which have greatly influenced the mugham tradition.
