L'opéra classique chinois Kunqu est né au XVIe siècle. Il représente le style le plus élaboré et le plus raffiné de l'opéra chinois. Point de batailles ni d'acrobaties comme dans l'opéra de Pékin, l'importance est d'abord donnée aux sentiments des personnages et à la musique qui fait appel aux flûtes, aux instruments à cordes et aux percussions. "Le Pavillon aux Pivoines", qui raconte une histoire d'amour née d'un songe, est sans nul doute l'oeuvre la plus importante du genre.

The Chinese classical opera, Kunqu, is born in the 16th century. It is the most elaborate and refined style of Chinese opera. No battle, no acrobatics, the most important are the feelings of the characters and the music based on flutes, strings and percussion instruments. "The Peony Pavilion" tells a love-story based on a dream. It is undoubtedly the most prominent work of this genre.
